Thailand defeated Myanmar 3-0 in the football 5-a-side (visual impairment) final for the gold medal at the National Sports Council ground in Bukit Jalil today
The Thais, who edged defending champion Malaysia en route to the final on Wednesday, emerged champions for the second time in four years after their 2014 triumph.
Coached by Chaiyaporn Na Ayatthaya, Thailand led 2-0 before the interval with goals from Panyawut Kupan (third minute) and Kittikorn Baodee eight minutes later. Kittikorn scored the third goal in the 31st minute.
Host Malaysia settled for bronze with a 1-0 win over Vietnam. Ahmad Fikri Omar scored in the 38th minute.
“We arrived with our mind fixed on the gold medal. It was a bit uncomfortable for the players to play on an artificial hockey pitch as back home we trained on grass. However, it is the same situation for all the other teams and gradually the players got used to it,” said Thai coach TAWEEP PIYAROON.
